Prime Minister Hon. Kassim Majaliwa has said the government has put in place strong strategies to ensure that the challenge of weeds in Lake Victoria is addressed to enable social activities to continue in those areas.
“I thank His Excellency President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan for agreeing to provide funds for the purchase of large-scale weed control machines in Lake Victoria to enable fishing, transport and shipping activities to continue.”
The Prime Minister said this while speaking to people when he inspected weed control activities in the Kigongo-Busisi area while on a working visit to Mwanza region.
Mr Majaliwa said that these weeds have been significantly affecting various social and economic activities in the lake, so the purchase of these machines will help in the destruction of these weeds.
In addition, the prime minister thanked the residents of those areas, including fishermen, who have volunteered to cooperate with the government in the exercise to remove these weeds.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has directed the Office of the Vice President for Environment to continue the work of removing the weeds until it is completed to ensure that social activities continue without any hindrance.
For his part, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Vice President for (Union and Environment,) Eng Cyprian Luhemeja, briefing the prime minister on the weed control activities, says that they are currently continuing the work of removing the native weeds that have spread over an area of more than 300 acres.
